PaKua

The Pa-Kua Symbol, on which all of the Pa-Kua knowledge is based, combines many element of Chinese philosophy. Understanding some of these concepts helps in understanding what Pa-Kua teaches us. Following is an explanation of the Pa-Kua Symbol components

Yin Yang
The concept of Yin Yang is one of the fundamental concepts of Chinese philosophy. It is a concept of relativity between two elements of a whole. Nothing in this concept is absolute. Not only is something Yin in comparison to something else which is Yang, but everything Yin contains a little bit of Yang and vice versa.
Nothing in our life is totally Yin nor totally Yang, and even something Yin in its majority is so only in comparison to something else that is Yang; in comparison to something else that is Yin it will be considered Yang. This concept is also very subjective. Something Yin in one persons set of values or judgment might be Yang in someone elses.
A thorough understanding of the Yin Yang concept is essential to the study of any Chinese knowledge.

The Eight Changes
Another fundamental concepts of Chinese philosophy is the theory of the Eight Changes. The Eight Changes are the basis of the original Chinese knowledge. The I-Ching, the most ancient book of Chinese knowledge, uses this concept as a starting point in to its multiplication and formation of the 64 Hexagrams. The study of the Eight Changes gives us an understanding of events and people we encounter in our daily life. It helps us look in to our past, understand it, and therefore helps us guide ourselves into the future.
The popular saying those who forget their past are bound to repeat their mistakes in the future is a clear summary of how the knowledge of the Eight Changes helps us navigate our future. Used as a system of classification of our ever-changing surroundings, the Eight Changes clarifies our understanding of the universe and its influences on our daily lives.

The Trigrams
The Trigrams are a series of combinations of three lines. Some of the lines are Yin (broken) lines and Yang (solid) lines.
The above eight combinations are all of the possible combinations (in threes) of two different lines.
There are many arrangements of the Trigrams. The one featured here is one that puts emphasis on the family structure, an all important concept in Pa-Kua teachings.
The influences of the family play a major role in the shaping of an individuals behaviour. Sometimes, a study of the family illuminates many details of a persons characteristics and behavior, thus shedding lights on his future.
In the Pa-Kua School an active involvement of the whole family in the studies is strongly encouraged.
The reason three lines are used for the formation of the Trigrams, as opposed to two lines or perhaps even four, relates to another all important concept in Chinese philosophy.
This is the concept of SKY MAN EARTH.

FATHER | MOTHER | ELDEST SON | ELDEST DAUGHTER | SECOND SON | SECOND DAUGHTER | YOUNGEST SON | YOUNGEST DAUGHTER |
This is another important classification method which is featured in all aspects of Chinese philosophy. Whether we are looking at distances in Pa-Kua Martial Art, considering differences in relationships, analyzing the different foods in our nutrition, or if we are studying the different energies in healing arts the concept of SKY MAN EARTH is omnipresent.
SKY is the furthest distance, it is safety, it is the energy coming from above, it is the spiritual, the abstract.
EARTH is the closest distance, it is danger, it is the energy from below, it is the material.
MAN is a combination of SKY and EARTH. It is also considered their neutralizer as well being subject to both of their influences. It is the middle ground.
Chinese philosophy believes that no relationship exists between two elements without the existence of a third element which neutralizes the two elements. The third element does not only fall under the influences of the two elements, but is also essential to the maintenance of the relationship between the two elements.

About Pa-Kua Huntington Beach
Construction of Pa-Kua Huntington Beach began on May 1st of 2003. The Studio held its Grand Opening on April 1st, 2003 that was filled with students, friends and of course family! From the very beginning Master Elizabeth Filleti and Master Jason Landau had a goal of working with the community to help both young and old reach their personal goals. They founded the Pa-Kua Huntington Beach Studio with those goals as well as the desire to provide a positive family environment for everyone to be able to learn Pa-Kua. Pa-Kua Huntington Beach is now one of the highest and most reviewed studio in Orange County, California.
In the summer of 2008 Pa-Kua Huntington Beach moved to a new location at 4952 Warner Ave. Suite #101 in Huntington Beach, California directly across the street from the first studio. The new location offered two training mats, café, changing area and large office. This has kept our class sizes nice at 2 to 10 students per class since we can offer 2 different classes each hour.
Pa-Kua Huntington Beach participates in many community events each year such as: HB July 4th Parade, L.A. Chinese New Year Parade, Senior Saturday at H.B. Pier, Pa-Kua National Gathering and many more! We also have supported many charities/events such as: American Heart Association, MS Walk, Soles 4 Souls, Teens for Jeans, Rodgers Senior Center as well as many, many more.
Pa-Kua Huntington Beach is a committed member of the Pa-Kua International League. The International League of Pa-Kua was founded by Master Giordano (More info in Pa-Kua History). We have the honor of learning from Itinerant Pa-Kua Masters that visit from all over the world to come teach Pa-Kua and allow for the highest ranking Black Belts in that area to continue taking classes and courses, as well as have internationally certified belt evaluations for the students. Currently we have the honor to have Master Nicolas Moyano as our Itinerant Master who is the Entitled Superior Master of Pa-Kua (Pa-Kua’s highest rank in the world).
Master Elizabeth Filleti-Landau is currently the highest ranking female Black Belt in Pa-Kua (7th highest overall), in the World! She was a direct student of Master Giordano (The founder of Pa-Kua International) and has been practicing Pa-Kua since 1987 and has owned 3 different Pa-Kua studios in 2 different countries. Master Elizabeth Filleti has also been featured in the Huntington Beach Independent twice as well as on TV, Radio, the H.B. Magazine and she holds 3 different Presidential Fitness Awards. Master Elizabeth Filleti has gone on itinerancy to Argentina, Brazil as well as various states within the United States such as: California, Illinois, New York and Florida.
Master Jason Landau has been practicing martial arts since the age of 8. He has received the Presidential Fitness award from both President Bush and President Obama. Master Jason Landau has studied with both Master Giordano and Entitled Superior Master Nicolas Moyano. He is currently the student of Master Elizabeth Filleti. He has given International and National Exhibitions of Pa-Kua such as a demonstration of sword cutting in the “Aulas Abiertas” in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2006 and an Acrobatics demonstration in “The Pa-Kua National Gathering” in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2009. Master Jason Landau has been on Itinerancy to Portland, Oregon and he is also the current Itinerant Master of New York which has the second largest group of Pa-Kua schools in the United States.
Itinerant Master
An Itinerant Master is a Master that is sent by the International League of Pa-Kua, to work with specific goals for the city, state or country they are asked to teach in. In California we are fortunate to have the Entitled Superior Master Nicolas D. Moyano as our Itinerant Master. He is the highest internationally ranked Black Belt and is the President of the International League of Pa-Kua. Master Moyano is the direct disciple of Master Giordano, the founder of Pa-Kua.
Itinerant Masters allow for the students and Masters throughout the world the opportunity to learn from another Master with different experience then their own Master or Instructor. An Itinerant Master can teach Courses & Seminars that might not be available to learn by the Masters who teach locally. It’s very important for the development of a student to take the opportunity and learn as much as possible from the Itinerant Master when he is here. Master Moyano travels all the way from Buenos Aires, Argentina to offer classes for all students and Masters. He is in California only 4 times per year. Master Moyano stays in California for two weeks each visit and will teach a few days in each of the five Pa-Kua Studios in California each visit.
Most of the Courses in Pa-Kua do not have any prerequisite. Anyone can request to take a Course, so invite your friends and family to join in.
